Neuralink's brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has successfully enabled Terry, an ALS patient who lost his ability to speak, to communicate through decoded neural signals. The implant records from ~3,000 sensors in Terry's motor cortex and translates attempted speech into natural-sounding audio using his original voice. This advancement moves beyond prior BCI applications (cursor control, gaming) to restore expressive communication—a milestone with potential impact on neurodegenerative disease treatment, though commercialization remains years away.
