Bank of Thailand Governor Vithai Rattanakorn is stepping up oversight of over 3,000 non-bank financial service providers and preparing regulations on Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) by late 2025. BNPL usage has exploded 99.9% annually (620K accounts in 2021 to 4.91M in 2024) with concerning trends: youth and low-income users are getting instant credit for everyday items (fried chicken, bubble tea) with 16-18% interest, driving debt accumulation. The central bank is concerned about consumer abuse, shadow-economy activity, and predatory lending. Vithai defended the Bank of Thailand's dual mandate: maintaining macroeconomic stability while now actively addressing structural problems affecting growth and household debt.
