World Bank analysis reveals Bangkok faces structural economic threats: traffic congestion costs 7–10% of the city's GRP annually, while climate-driven flooding poses risks ranging from 0.5% to 15% of national GDP depending on event severity. The 2011 floods (which impacted auto, electronics, and hard-drive industries) cost 1.43 trillion baht (~13% of that year's GDP) and reduced national growth by 1.1 points. Concentrating 89% of post-2008 growth in urban areas leaves Thailand vulnerable; the report recommends strengthening secondary cities alongside Bangkok as a network to support the 5.4% annual per-capita GDP growth needed to reach high-income status by 2037.
