Thailand's Deputy PM has ordered the Revenue Department to urgently restructure automotive excise tax within September to prevent local manufacturers from relocating to Indonesia. The current import tariff structure is deemed unfair: FTA partner countries benefit from zero tariffs while local producers face higher costs, threatening domestic production, investment, and jobs. The government plans to use excise tax as a policy lever since import tariffs are constrained by trade agreements. A similar measure on Chinese imports already generated 3+ billion baht in additional revenue.
