TikTok and ByteDance agreed to pay $400 million USD (~131 billion baht) to settle a US Department of Justice and FTC lawsuit over illegal collection of children's personal data without parental consent under COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act). While the settlement represents the largest COPPA penalty to date, TikTok admitted no wrongdoing. The settlement follows TikTok's recent structural changes involving US investor ownership through Oracle, Silver Lake, and MGX to address data security concerns and avoid a platform ban.
