IBM has unveiled a new dual-architecture CPU for mainframes that can seamlessly switch between z/Architecture and Arm modes at nanosecond speed using KVM hypervisor. This single 11-core chip (2nm process, 5.7GHz) enables legacy z/OS workloads and modern Linux/Arm applications to run on unified hardware without porting—a significant capability consolidation for enterprises with mixed legacy and cloud-native needs. Expected availability around 2028 for IBM Z and LinuxONE systems.
