China is rapidly converting its manufacturing dominance into high-tech industry leadership by linking R&D investment (8.1% growth in 2025, targeting 7% annual increases through 2030) with its existing production and supply chain capabilities. Thailand faces a critical juncture: 1.37 trillion baht in FDI (including 321 Chinese projects worth 45.8 billion baht) presents opportunity, but the key question is whether Thai suppliers and engineers will advance up the value chain into R&D and IP creation, or remain confined to assembly and contract manufacturing while design and technology stay abroad.
